FAQ
Is there an age requirement to be eligible for Ability-to-Benefit Title IV, HEA student assistance (Title IV aid)?
There is no specific age requirement. However, to apply for ATB Title IV funding the applicant must be beyond the age required by the state to attend school. The federal student aid eligibility criteria for ATB is for postsecondary students who:
- Do not have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and
- Are beyond the age of compulsory school attendance in the state where the institution is located.
- For most states this is somewhere between 16-18 years old as outlined within the State Education Practices 1.2 data tables section of IES National Center for Education Statistics.
